August 28th is apparently National Red Wine Day… and really who am I to argue an excuse to celebrate such a wonderful drink?
Surprisingly Red Wine is how I really got into wine. Most people start off easy with to light white wines, but I dove right in with a spicy Cabernet Sauvignon with my parents and has been hooked ever since. When I first started drinking wine it was a social thing that made me feel sophisticated (lets be serious though, I was still in college and drinking from a box) and fancy. But – I didn’t really understand how unique and intricate wine could really be at this time.
My now husband and I started to really get into wine and learning about wine about 6 years ago – we enjoyed it so much we had a wine themed wedding.
As much as I love Fashion – I love Wine too and wanted to use this blog as a place to talk about wine and help others have easy access to basic wine information.
When I first started getting more interested in Wine I started with these two books:
Both of these books are available on Amazon:
– The Wine Bible – Here
– Wine Folly – Here
* Just a side note this version of Wine Folly is the original book – they have a new edition coming out this September – It is available for pre-order (which obviously, I did).
Here is the major differences in the books – The Wine Bible is an extremely comprehensive and detailed book that really dives into wine extensively. Wine Folly is a great basic starter book, it uses a lot of easy to understand graphics to get the information about wine basics to its readers. Both books are really wonderful and I highly recommend them.
I also recommend downloading the free app Vivino to your phone – this app changed my life. You take a picture of the label on your wine bottle – it finds the bottle, gives you loads of information about the wine and lets you rate the wine out of 5 stars. The reason I love this app so much is because it logs all the wines I have tried, how I rated them and develops my flavor profile based off of my ratings and suggests great new wines for me.
Since it is National Red Wine Day — allegedly. My wine recommendation for the day is Dievole Chianti Classico – I particularly enjoy the 2015. It is an Italian red wine that consists of Sangiovese grapes. I find this wine to be on the drier side and have a medium to bold body with an intense red color. It has tastes of ripe red fruits – think cherries. It pairs well with pasta in your traditional red sauce, cheeses and grilled meats.
I hope you try this wine and make sure to let me know what you think of it if you do!
Cheers!
xo Kait.
